The latest dilemma of life dawned when.a student added me on Facebook.
A bright student. The kind of student who asks serious questions and minds his own business. The kind of student with whom the.teacher is impressed. The kind of student in whom potential is as clear as in 1/2mvsquare.
I like this kid and will always help him academically. But am I ready for him to see what teacher looks like in clothes other than full-sleeved kurta and neat dupatta's.
Hell no.
To this kid and his class I teach history. He is a Civil Services Aspirant. The dichotomy of a person who speaks of World Wars and India's nuclear triad on one hand and goes from acerbic to honey-sugar-sweet on her FB wall on another are, well, a lot.
So my over-thinking hat came on along with a volley of questions.
1. Am I living a dual life?
Ans. No baba...kuch limits honi hi.chahiye. Usme ghalat kya hai?
2. Parr ye itna discomfort, over a friend request? From a child? Unheard of..
Ans. See, in class you behave like a learned 50 year old ambassador. On your FB, you are, well 17, max. Toh wo tera 17 year waala roop dekh ke shayad tere 50 year waale roop ko respect na kare. Ye baat ho sakti hai.
3. Haan yaar...bilkul legit baat. Matt ad kar.
Ans. Yes. :-)
Yes? Makes sense?

Yes. I do think it does. Lines do need to be drawn in such a case.

Well, my personal experience suggests that adding students on Facebook doesn't hamper teacher's freedom, if the student is sensible enough! So the decision to add or not depends on the sensibility of the kid.
